Friends and followers– it’s officially fall!
Bring on the boots, scarves, leaves, football games, and everything pumpkin-flavored. It’s the best season for food, weather, and most of all – fashion. It’s my favorite time of year. So it only makes sense that I’d put forth so much effort into compiling a list of the essentials every fashionista needs this fall. It took hours to find my favorite items and narrow it down into the perfect assortment: small enough that it’s attainable if you’re starting with the bare minimum, but large enough that you have endless outfit combinations all season long.
The Fall Fifteen
1. Leather Jacket
This sounds like a given, but you’d be amazed by how many stylish ladies have yet to own a quality leather jacket. They’re the perfect layering item, making a simple outfit instantly feel classy, yet edgy. Wear it with some skinnies and some confidence, and you’ll be sure to turn a few heads.
My pick: Express [Minus the] Leather Moto Jacket. $118
2. Casual Jacket
When you’re not feeling the leather, it’s good to have a backup. I’d recommend a denim or utility jacket. I personally have both, but they serve a similar purpose. You can toss it on with virtually anything to keep you warm or just give some character. You don’t have to drop a huge chunk of change either– but do keep in mind it’s an item that can be carried over for several seasons, so you want it to be of high quality.
My denim pick: American Eagle Faded Denim Jacket. $49.95
My utility jacket pick: Pacsun LA Hearts Utility Jacket. $54.95
3. Dark Wash Denim
The most flattering of all washes, dark denim goes with everything and looks great on every body type. Whether your love your flares, boots, or skinnies, dark denim is a fool-proof way to look great.
My pick: Gap Always Skinny Jeans. $69.95
*tip: if you sign up for Gap’s emails, they frequently have whole-house 30% off sales, making these only $49!
4. Colored Chinos
Nowadays, it’s hard to find something I love more than a good pair of chinos. Working at Lands’ End, I went a little chino-crazy and I own nearly every color. But don’t knock it before you try it– these aren’t just for dressier occasions. Chinos can be worn with a tee for an ultra-casual look or with a blazer for the workplace. They’re a step up from your favorite denim, and if you pick a bold color, you’ll be sure to make an even bolder statement.
My pick: Lands’ End Canvas True Slim Chinos. $59
5. Riding Boots
It was quite the task to narrow the fantastic fall assortment of shoes and boots into just three pairs, because, let’s be honest: every one of you owns at least 4 times that amount. But if you happen to be traveling this fall, or want to start fresh, I picked three pairs that are different enough that you’d have something for every outfit. The first: riding boots. If you pick the right tone, they go with everything. Don’t fuss over black going with brown and vice versa – if it’s leather, then it goes with everything. I promise.
My pick: Steve Madden Eaglee Riding Boots. $69.95
6. Ankle Boots
When I said there is nothing I love more than a pair of chinos, I lied. Ankle boots hands-down are my biggest weakness. I own at least ten pairs. Now you don’t need to go out and buy ten pairs, as long as you get a sturdy, neutral pair.
My pick: Target Mossimo Kiriana Ankle Boot. $34.99
If you’re not feeling boots, there is no better way to go than an uber-comfy pair of TOMS. Whether you love the classics, cordones, or even the ballet flats, you’re guaranteed to be comfortable and cute. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a girl in TOMS? Don’t these burgundy classics just scream “fall“?
My pick: Earthwise Burgundy Classics. $54
8. Shirt Dress
For those days that you’re really not feeling the pants, but you don’t feel like getting dressed up, enter: the shirt-dress. The epitome of casualwear, shirt-dresses are a crazy-comfortable way to effortlessly look put-together. Throw on some boots and a scarf and you’re on your way.
My pick: Lands’ End Canvas Chambray Slouchy Shirtdress. $69
9. Chambray Shirt
If you know me, you know that I’m obsessed with anything in the chambray/oxford/denim family. The reason? It goes with anything, under anything, over anything, layered with anything. It’s not too late to jump on the lightweight bandwagon.
My pick: J.Crew Factory Classic Chambray Shirt. $54.50
10. Cable Knit Sweater
Nothing brings me back to my childhood like a chunky cable knit sweater. I associate them with the holidays, which is what fall is leading into anyway. But don’t be mistaken, a cable crew is not just for the holidays. Pair it with some shorts on a cool fall day for an ultra-flirty feel. Aren’t those back buttons to die for?
My pick: Anthropologie Cable-Fuse Pullover. $88
Diamonds aren’t a girl’s best friend; cardigans are a girl’s best friend. A quality cardigan in a neutral color can be worn with dresses, skirts, shorts, denim, tees, tanks, chambray – anything. If you want one with a little bit of character, get one with a knit-in design or some elbow patches.
My pick: Tilly’s Razzle Dazzle Elbow Patch Cardigan. $27.99
12. Patterned Scarf
Scarves the the best fall accessory and can spice up an ensemble. If you’re not feeling the heavy winter scarves yet, go with a lightweight woven. Pick a paisley or an animal print and pattern on up!
My pick: Forever 21 Multi-colored Bandana Print Scarf. $10.80
13. Sweater Tights
For those extra-chilly fall mornings, brave the cold with some cozy sweater tights. Sweater tights work great for a wide range of temperatures. They also lean more towards the casual side in comparison to your typical sheer tights. Pick a bold color or a knit-in pattern to add some interest and texture.
My pick: Target Merona Cable Sweater Tights. $12
14. A-line Skirt
To top off the clothing portion of the assortment, set your sights on an A-line skirt. It rounds out your bottoms collection, adding a skirt to your denim, chinos, shirt dress, and sweater tights. Just another option you’ll want to have on those layer-loving days. In the fall, I tend to lean toward the longer skirts, but I throw on a belt to accent my waistline to ensure a super feminine silhouette.
My pick: Modcloth Living The Dream Skirt. $49.99
Once you’re perfectly outfitted for fall from head to toe, grab a leather satchel to hit the streets. Satchels are perfect for this care-free, wind-blowin’, coffee-drinkin’ season. Throw it on over your shoulder, and go show off your fall-friendly wardrobe. Plus, it coordinates beautifully with those burgundy TOMS!
My pick: Target Merona Flap Closure Hobo Bag. $29.99
