Oh hey there!

Over the weekend, my sisters and I were talking about our “signature color”– AKA the color we look best in.  It’s funny, because people tend to know this about themselves, but I had absolutely no idea.  I knew the colors I look bad in: yellow, bright greens, white, pink, etc.  I also knew the colors I wore the most: grey, navy, black, and tan.  But were these colors actually the ones I looked best in? Who knows?  I think it was decided that Mal looks best in purple, Steph in Blue, and me in neutrals.  So it was pretty convenient that I happened to be wearing tan sweater as that was decided.  It’d be rather unfortunate if it was agreed upon that I look awful in neutrals– because 95% of the time, there’s nothing I’d rather wear.

So for my very neutral ensemble, I layered a long, oatmeal heather sweater over a chambray button down with boyfriend shorts and leather ankle boots.  My touches of color came from my multi-color German socks (yes– knitted by a genuine German grandmother!), burgundy satchel, and YSL lipstick.  Some may call my lack of color in my wardrobe boring, but I really wouldn’t have it any other way.  There is something very sophisticated and easy about neutrals, that is harder to attain with a lot of color.

Oh hello!  As if I don’t say this every Friday, but thank you sweet baby Jesus, it’s Friday.  Today is an exciting day because my best friend from college, Mary, is coming to visit and will be here this afternoon!  I’m so excited to see her and show her around Madison.  Today is also very bittersweet – but let me give you a little background first. On Sunday, I adopted a cat named Luna.  She is about 4 years old and is FIV+.  She had been at the shelter for 8 months.  I naturally, could not resist.  I found out after I took her home that I could not have her at my apartment unless she was front declawed, which she is not.  Her surgery is today, and needless to say, there was a lot of crying this week.  So I am so excited to see my best friend today, but I’m so sad that Luna is staying at the vet overnight and has to go through the pain of this surgery.

Isn’t she precious?

On to fashion. Over the weekend, temperatures heated up, so the shorts came back out.  What’s ironic is that it is forecasted to snow tomorrow, but nevertheless, it was summer temperatures last weekend, so I dressed appropriately.  For the unusually warm lazy Saturday, I played it cool in a plaid popover and boyfriend shorts.  Even on these warmer days, I’m still too invested in the fact that it’s fall, so I’m often compromising.  I still want to wear my fall clothes, but I choose my most lightweight options in order to stand up to the heat.  I know people will want to throw something at me for saying it, but I’m kind of excited for this weekend’s cool down.

goodbye, summer

Hello and Happy Labor Day!

I’m personally enjoying my day off with a little relaxation, a bit of cleaning, some grocery shopping, and of course, blogging.  I apologize for being a bit MIA the past few weeks– I’ve been just dropping in here and there.  There are really two reasons for this.  1.  Currently, my job has taken over my life.  Due to recent circumstances, I’ve been working an unhealthy amount of time (AKA– 60 hours this past week) and haven’t had much time to blog, let alone sleep.  And 2.  I’m working on a blog redesign, which will transfer pleatsandpearls to a different platform.  I’m pretty excited for the change, but it’s definitely taking some time to get my content transferred over.  My good friend, Anna, has graciously offered to help me with the design portion, which is a huge weight off my shoulders.  But, in the near future, we’ll be hopping over to a brand new platform– when I get an idea of when, I’ll be posting on here to let you all know where to move over to.

As summer is winding down, I’m making my best effort to get my last summer outfits in.  Although my work style has completely transitioned over to fall  (as the air conditioning is ALWAYS cranked), my weekend style is still holding on to that last thread of summer.  For a humid evening at the terrace, I paired an easy Oxford popover with my favorite boyfriend shorts and some shimmery sandals.  Don’t get me wrong– I love the fall.  It’s the best season by far, but I will miss my leggy-looks I’ve been donning for the past few months.  Oh well, until next year.

As much as I love fall, I will miss summer nights at the terrace with these guys.

Hi there!

Happy Sunday! I just got back from a short weekend trip to Milwaukee for my Cool Uncle Tom’s 50th birthday party.  They just built a new house on the lake and it was incredible.  I even got to go out on a boat for the first time this morning! It was a fun, relaxing weekend surrounded by family, card games, and good food.

Time is just flying and it’s hard to believe that just a week ago, I got back from my Colorado vacation.  On our last day in Denver, my dad, sister and I explored downtown and went to a Rockies game (although I was rooting for the Twins!).  I wanted to stay comfortable since the weather was a little ominous and we’d be leaving after the Rockies game for an 11 hour drive home.  I mixed a few of my basics to create a sort of effortless grungy-prep (if that’s even a thing).

boy meets girl.

Good morning!

So it would be a bit of an understatement to say that I love menswear.  Obsessed would be a more accurate term.  Ever since my first editor pulled me into the world of menswear, I was hooked.  I’ll spare you from me hopping on my menswear soapbox, but all you really need out of this is that menswear is my life.  Luckily for me, this boy-meets-girl style is trend-right at the moment, so there’s no need for me to be shy about my passion (not that I’m ever shy when it comes to fashion).  I personally like to go all out and mix my mens with the ever hot sport trend for an extra edgy ensemble, but there are easier ways to incorporate it into your wardrobe.  Mix a cute sweater with a boyfriend jean; blazer with a feminine frock; an oxford with a full skirt.  There are so many ways to slice it and dice it that it’s almost hard not to have some menswear inspirations somewhere in your wardrobe.

But like I said, I like to go all out when it comes to infusing menswear into my daily dress.  Paired with a freshly done do’ and a boat-load of confidence, I was feeling better than ever.
